The historic DeRose Windmill House in the Hamptons is a gorgeous property that was bought by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, and when I heard these names, I bet that they had done something really interesting and unique with it, and it turned out to be true! The Downeys hired designer Joe Nahem to make this home super whimsy and funny, and the whole project took only 6 weeks – you won’t believe that upon seeing it.
The entry reminds me of colorful paintings by Salvador Dali: colorful striped wallpaper, a bold blue ikat rug, there are two crazy colorful artworks that define the space. They are highlighted even more with two colorful and printed upholstered benches, a glass top coffee table and very interesting sculptures – art takes an important place in this home.
The living room features wooden beams on the ceiling that match the floor and stand out in a very bold space. The living room floor was lowered several feet around a new fireplace wall by ceramic artist Peter Lane – this fireplace is a bold eye-catcher. The designer created a real conversation pit around the fireplace, and bench was accessorized with colorful pillows, and a couple of bold artworks add to the space.
The kitchen features a reclaimed wood ceiling and a very interesting tile floor. There’s a breakfast space done with a whimsy pink upholstered bench and some cute creamy chairs. The mint countertops and rose gold pendant lamps match the colorful floor.
The dining room is super whimsy! It’s done with warm textural wallpaper and very eye-catchy sculptural furniture – a dining table with animal-like legs and a wavy dresser with metallic detailing. I love the idea of adding turquoise accents here and there: they refresh the room and contrast yellow. Enjoy the pics of this amazing home below!
