What Is A Wishbone Chair?
The Wishbone chair presents a Y-shaped back that supports an elegant, curved back-and-armrest, removing the need for the heavy arms and back of traditional Western dining chairs. This sharply bent back rest has a flat inner face, so it does not stick into the back of the person sitting in the chair and the splat is actually forked – to form a pronounced Y that gives the chair its name.
Where the design moves on and away from the structural form of the China chairs is that those chairs have a box-like arrangement of vertical legs supporting the seat and usually with square cross sections whereas the Wishbone has elegantly tapered legs with the thickest part at the top where more wood is necessary to make it as strong as possible to take the tenons of the frames of the seat.
The front and back legs of the chair, from the seat down, have the same profile – making the design look simpler – although the back legs are closer together and are splayed out at a slightly greater angle to provide most stability under the center point of the weight of the person when they are sitting down.

Danish furniture designer Hans J. Wegner in the 1940s saw a series of photographs of tradesmen sitting in Chinese Ming-era chairs and became captivated by the shapely seats. He had been experimenting with design for a year and then created one of the most known and recognizable chairs of the 20th (century: The Wishbone Chair. The chair was first produced by Carl Hansen & Son in 1949, the seat—officially named the CH24, but known more commonly by the shape of its unique back.
