Dragsholm Castle

Built in 1200, the Dragsholm Castle is not only one of the oldest castles in Denmark, it is also the home to many of the longest-staying guests. Though there isn’t an exact number of spirited figures who still roam the grounds—some believe the number to be in the hundreds—there are three who make a particular impression: the Grey Lady, the White Lady, and the Earl of Bothwell.

Visitors may encounter the Grey Lady in their rooms at night, because even in her death, this grateful spirit still keeps a close eye on the castle grounds to make sure things are in order. When the Grey Lady was alive, she was believed to be a worker who suffered from a horrible toothache, which was cured by someone in the castle. She has been repaying the kind deed ever since.

The White Lady’s tale is by far more tragic, and begins with the discovery, during a renovation in the early 20th century, of a young girl’s skeleton in a white dress hidden within a wall. Legend has it that these bones once belonged to the daughter of the castle’s former owner. She fell madly in love with a commonplace worker, and when her father learned of the affair he had her locked within a room in the castle, never to see the light of day again. Her young spirit has been seen roaming the halls at night, perchance searching for her lost love.

The Earl of Bothwell, James Hepburn, a consort to Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned for murder in the Dragsholm Castle cellars, where he eventually went mad and died in 1578. Visitors can see the same pillar where the Earl was once chained, and if they’re lucky, they may even catch a glimpse of the Earl riding into the courtyard with a horse and carriage. Some visitors have even claimed to hear the sound of horses when there’s nothing there.

Today, Dragsholm Castle is a hotel, restaurant, and a museum. Rooms start around $226 USD per night, and include breakfast. The hotel also offers guided tours exploring the castle’s 800-year history.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast

You may have heard of Lizzie Borden from the playground rhyme, “Lizzie Borden took an axe/ And gave her mother 40 whacks/ When she saw what she had done/ She gave her father 41.” However, the mystery surrounding the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden is much more complicated than a simple child’s game.

For instance, Lizzie was never found guilty for the slaying of her father and stepmother, and to this day, the case remains unsolved. Come decide for yourself what actually happened on the morning of August 4, 1892, by staying in the house in Fall River, Massachusetts, where it all took place. Choose from six rooms, including the one where Abby Borden’s body was discovered. Retrace the gruesome events by starting your morning with a breakfast reminiscent of the ones the Bordens ate as their last meal.

You may even encounter the restless spirit of Lizzie herself. Some who have stayed here have heard giggling. Others claim to feel a chill in certain spots of the house. And, those who snap photos seem to always catch an orb or possibly the faint outline of a face.

Rooms are typically in the $250 to $315 range per night, with prices known to spike during high season. However, if you’d like to learn more about the infamous murders without spending the night, you can tour the property during daylight hours for $30.

Fairmont Banff Springs

The Fairmont Banff Springs, “Canada’s Castle in the Rockies,” has seen many prestigious guests since it first opened its doors more than 120 years ago. In fact, some liked the place so well that they never left.

This is the case with Sam the Bellman, who worked at the hotel for many years. Before his death, Sam joked that he would return to the hotel he held so dearly in the afterlife. Many guests will attest that Sam kept his word.

The first sighting was by two elderly ladies who couldn’t get the key to work in their room door. Feeling uneasy because of the late hour and darkened corridor, they called the front desk for assistance and were told to wait for the bellman. However, when the bellman arrived, the ladies were already safely in their room. When asked how they managed that, they stated that the gray-haired bellman had appeared moments after they called and opened the door for them. The young bellman was bewildered since no one matching that description worked at the hotel. Since that time, the elderly bellhop with a Scottish brogue has been assisting guests and keeping a watchful eye on his hotel.

Visitors may also encounter the spirit of a young bride. Close to the time of the hotel’s grand opening in the 1930s, a groom waited in the library at the top of a candlelit, winding, limestone staircase for his true love to ascend. As she made her way up the stairs, her hem of her dress brushed against one of the candle’s flames and caused her to jump back, which sent her tumbling to her death. Guests claim to occasionally see her, still dressed in her white lace gown, dancing her wedding waltz alone, without her love.

Rooms start at roughly $400 per night, with many in the $500-$600 range, but there are plenty of package deals available to keep your heart from racing.

The Stanley Hotel

Built in the early 1900s, the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, has hosted many guests, including the master of horror, Stephen King. While staying in room 217, King was inspired to write The Shining, about a grand hotel in the Rocky Mountains that possesses its guests. Though most of King’s inspiration came from his own twisted imagination, the Stanley is home to a few spirits.

The most notable ghost is the original owner, F.O. Stanley, who has been spotted in the lobby and the billiard room. His wife, Flora, who once entertained guests with her skillful piano playing in the ballroom, still plays to this day. Hotel staff have heard music coming from that room, and have even seen the piano keys moving—though the music stops abruptly once they enter.

The greatest activity, however, is said to take place on the fourth floor, especially in room 418. When the room is empty, strange noises emanate from behind the doors. Guests often report hearing children’s laughter in the hallway at night. The staff has even seen an imprint on the bed, although no one had been sleeping there.

Gosforth Hall Inn

Built in 1658 by Robert Copley, who was suspected of being a Roman Catholic at a time when that meant death, the Gosforth Hall Inn has long been a sanctuary for lost souls. The inn may not publicly advertise its uninvited guests, but the owners are happy to share their experiences if asked.

And there’s plenty to talk about. Some guests have seen curtains billow in a room with no wind, felt the playful presence of a child, and even met apparitions in their rooms at night.

Room 11 is not only the biggest room at the inn, but it’s also the most popular for otherworldly sightings. The room has what people believe to be a priest’s hole (a hiding place for priests during the Roman Catholic persecution). At night, guests have woken to see a man dressed as a monk or friar, sitting next to the hole. Another guest once encountered a little old lady wearing an off-white dress and hair pulled back into a bun floating above the floor by the window, who vanished the moment the guest spoke.

There’s also the tale that Copley built the upper stories from the timbers of ship wrecks found along the Irish coast. The story goes that the timbers groan in anguish for the men whose final moments were spent clinging to their sturdy wood before the sea claimed their lives. Visitors who listen carefully just might hear a few final pleas for help.

The Marshall House

Savannah has a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in the U.S., so it’s only fitting its first hotel would be a premier gathering place for restless souls. Built in 1851, the Marshall House has accommodated yellow fever victims, and was once used as a Union clinic for wounded soldiers during the Civil War.

In the 1960s, the amputated bones of patients were unearthed while renovating the hotel, and hotel guests have been reporting stories of creepy encounters ever since. For instance, some guests wake to the feeling of someone holding their wrist, much in the same way nurses would take a pulse. Others have felt the presence of a little girl rumored to be searching for her father who died in one of the rooms.

Rooms start around $230 for weekday stays during high season. If you’d rather hear the stories than experience them first-hand, you can always schedule a haunted walking tour for $29. You’ll stop at many of Savannah’s eerie establishments, including the Marshall House.

Villa di Corliano

Recognized as one of the most prestigious Renaissance villas in Tuscany, Villa di Corliano‘s luxury and grandeur is more than enough reason to never leave—even after the body has given up the ghost. Built in the 15th century, the building’s exterior is decorated in graffiti typical of the Florentine Mannerist Art and dating back to the 1500s.

The villa has been home to and welcomed many prestigious guests throughout its time. In fact, it is one such person that is thought to remain on the grounds to this day.

By the light of a full moon, guests have encountered a noblewoman, known as the “White Ghost,” lurking in their rooms. Some local peasants even claimed once to see her in the drive of the park leading a six-horse coach, where she stopped at the Ragnaia, or “Cobweb Corner,” to stare longingly at the villa which they believed was once her home. Known also as a good-natured spirit, she is also responsible for moving tapestries and rearranging ornaments, and a slamming door or mysteriously opened window is considered her handiwork. Occasionally the underground passageways beneath the wine cellar ring with giggling or the sound of footsteps. There is also the account of one night when the hall was filled with the thunderous sound of the crystal chandelier crashing to the floor, but when the chandelier was found, it was right where it should be without one crystal out of place.

So, who is the “White Ghost?” Speculative fingers point to the direction of Maria Teresa Scolastica Ottavia della Seta Gaetani Bocca who was married at the villa in 1755, but there is very little to support that claim. For now, her identity remains as mysterious as her presence in the villa.

The Admiral Fell Inn

With a history dating back to the 1700s, the Admiral Fell Inn once served as a safe haven for sailors while their ships called at Baltimore. The historic hotel still maintains the same home-away-from-home appeal for all travelers today, whether they have a pulse or not.

One of the more notable supernatural occurrences happened during Hurricane Isabel in 2003, when the hotel was evacuated except for a few managers. During the night, merriment and dancing could be heard above the lobby, but the only breathing people in the hotel were on the ground floor. The next night, the noises became so loud that the floor actually vibrated.

Rooms start in the $150-$200 range, but if you dare not spend the night, you can embark on a Fells Point Ghost Tour to see what other apparitions are hiding in this seaside town.

Boston to Provincetown Fast Ferry

To make the most of your day in Provincetown, catch the first sailing of Bay State Cruise Company’s Provincetown Fast Ferry, which departs from Boston’s Seaport neighborhood at 8:30 am.

The Provincetown Fast Ferry costs $70 round-trip and takes approximately 95 minutes, so you’ll be in Provincetown by 10:05 am. The ferry is definitely the best way to get from Boston to Cape Cod for a day trip. With no traffic, the drive between the two would take just over two hours. On a summer weekend, the drive could easily take over three hours—and then you have to worry about parking once you arrive in Provincetown. The ferry is much more comfortable and stress-free, and you’ll have great views of the Boston skyline on the way out of the harbor. 

I recommend making a reservation or buying tickets in advance, as the ferry does sell out, especially on summer weekends. 

Morning

The ferry will drop you off in Provincetown at a centrally located dock, a short walk from Commercial Street, Provincetown’s main hub. Start your day with a stroll down Commercial Street, stopping in Joe Coffee for caffeine and breakfast. 

Spend time exploring the lively downtown area, popping in and out of the unique locally-owned boutiques for some souvenirs. Once you’re fully shopped out, walk to the town beach near MacMillan Pier. This small beach is a great spot to catch some rays while you watch the boats come in and out of the harbor. 

Afternoon

Grab lunch at Box Lunch, a local institution that has been serving its unique “rollwich” wraps since 1977. This old-school eatery recently upgraded and moved to a larger location on Commercial Street. Enjoy your wrap at one of the tables on the beautiful outdoor patio perfectly positioned for people-watching. If you’re craving a classic Cop Cod lobster roll, this is the best place to get one.

After lunch, head to Art’s Dune Tours for the 1 pm departure. This hour-long adventure costs $41.20 per person. Sit back and relax in the comfortable SUV while your guide drives you through Provincetown’s iconic sand dunes and shares the history and ecology of the area. You’ll see the town’s famous dune shacks where artists and writers Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, and Jackson Pollock have holed up and worked. 

After the tour, Art’s will drop you back downtown, where it’s an easy walk to the inclined elevator that will take you up to the entrance of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum. At 252 feet, the Pilgrim Monument is Provincetown’s most easily identifiable sight, as it’s the highest point for miles. (It’s also the tallest all-granite tower in the U.S.) 

Climb the tower’s 116 steps and 60 ramps to be rewarded with beautiful views of Provincetown and the ocean—and on a clear day, you can even see Boston. Although all those stairs may sound intimidating, the journey to the top only takes around 10 minutes. Don’t forget to collect your free sticker that boasts “I made it to the top” from the museum at the end. 

After the climb, leave plenty of time to explore the Provincetown Museum, which showcases a variety of exhibits on the area’s history. 

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum are open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The last climb to the top of the tower starts at 6:15 p.m. 

Tickets include entrance to the monument and museum and cost $20.94 for adults. Seniors 65 and older and teenagers aged 13-17 can purchase discounted tickets for $16.75. Tickets for children aged 4-12 cost $9.42. 

Evening

Make a 5:30 pm reservation for Liz’s Cafe Anybody’s Bar—you’ll beat the dinner rush at this popular place and have plenty of time to catch the last ferry back to Boston. Dine outside on the large patio, but make sure you take a peek inside to admire the Dory Bar, a quirky boat-inspired bar made out of historic maritime decor. Behind the bar, the bartender serves refreshing spins on standard cocktails, like the Fresh Paloma (served with a Tajani rim) or the Porch Swing (made with Woodford Reserve bourbon, fresh lemon juice, local honey, and peach tea).

The menu at Liz’s is classically Italian, with a Cape Cod influence. Start with the Portuguese Kale Soup, and opt for the traditional homemade pesto pasta for your main dish. This simple but perfectly executed pesto is made in-house with fresh basil and will ruin you for store-bought pesto from a jar for the rest of your life. If you have room for dessert after all that, the flourless chocolate cake is a decadent way to cap off your evening. 

Walk off your meal on your way back to the ferry. The last Provincetown Fast Ferry back to Boston departs at 7:30 pm. You’ll be back in the Seaport by 9:05 pm and can enjoy sleeping in your own bed.

Instead of London: Bristol, England

King Charles’ coronation in May put London at the top of mind for many travelers. If you’d rather immerse yourself among locals instead of tourists, head to Bristol for the ultimate British city getaway. Small Bristol hosts an incredibly diverse food scene and is full of unique shops and restaurants. In fact, Gloucester Road, Bristol’s main street, is said to have the highest concentration of independent businesses in the United Kingdom. 

Bristol will also give you a taste of English country life alongside your city break. This outdoorsy destination straddling the River Avon has plenty of opportunities for sports, including kayaking, paddle boarding, walking, and biking. 

Instead of Cancún: Holbox, Mexico

Just off the north coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula lies Holbox, a small and peaceful island alternative to crowded Cancún. Holbox is full of amazing natural attractions—it’s one of the best places in the Caribbean to swim with whale sharks. Although the sharks look large and intimidating, their tiny teeth only allow them to eat small fish and plants (not humans).

Ivan Svacov, Intrepid Deputy Operations Manager, Southeast Europe, recommends Croatia’s Pelijesac peninsula as a less-visited European alternative. “Being Croatian I would naturally start with praising the unmatched beauty of the Adriatic coast,” extols Svacov. “Peljesac peninsula was recently connected to the mainland for the first time with a bridge and has become even more accessible.”

Svacov cites the region’s wineries, famous seafood, and outdoor sports (including windsurfing in Vinjerac and hiking) as reasons to visit.

Instead of New York City: Chicago, Illinois

Even New Yorkers don’t want to be in the city in the summer—locals flock to seaside destinations like the Hamptons in an effort to escape the stifling heat. Chicago’s lakefront location makes it the better choice for an urban vacation.

Chicago comes alive in the summer as locals embrace the sunshine after a long cold winter. With fun events like the Hyde Park Summer Fest and the Old Town Art Fair happening nearly every week, you’ll never be bored in the summer.

Instead of Las Vegas: Palm Springs, California

Seoul’s public transportation system is consistently named one of the best in the world—it’s clean, fast, and affordable, making it easy to explore the outer reaches of the city. 

Instead of Seattle: Portland, Oregon

Seattle may be bigger in size, but Portland is the better bet for visitors looking for an eclectic city experience. Portland’s small size and unique neighborhoods make it extremely walkable (or bikeable, thanks to an extensive network of cycling lanes) and you’ll be sure to discover a charming coffee shop or boutique bookstore on every corner as you wander.

If you want the laid-back Florida vibe without the Miami traffic and crowds, head north to Fort Myers. 

Jackie Parker, Communications Manager for Lee County CVB, tells SmarterTravel, that Fort Myers is the perfect vacation spot if you’re looking for solitude. “There’s plenty of room to explore at a more laid-back pace,” says Parker. Think: “Sunset cruises on the Gulf of Mexico, fresh grouper sandwiches at your choice of restaurants, and unique places to shop.”

Still scrambling to find an affordable summer vacation? Laura Burdett-Munns, Managing Director, Journeysmiths, offers these tips:

Be Flexible

Widen your search to include alternative destinations and consider traveling outside of peak season. According to Burdett-Munns, lodges and camps in Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, like Masai Mara and the Serengeti, are already sold out for the summer, so she recommends looking to lesser-known areas, suggesting instead Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, or Kenya’s diverse Laikipia region.

“Each offers an amazing safari experience, only without the crowds,” says Burdett-Munns. “There’s loads of availability still to be had in these regions, especially at the smaller, more intimate camps, which in our opinion, provide a more immersive and authentic experience.”

Staying Longer Can Save Money

You’ll get more value for your money if you’re able to extend your stay. Burdett-Munns says travelers can frequently find deals for longer trips, such as getting four nights at a hotel for the price of three. 

Consider Low Season Destinations

Summer isn’t high season everywhere, so look to places where it’s low season in order to find great deals. Costa Rica, for example, has its rainest weather from May to mid-December. 

During this “green season,” you’ll find better deals and fewer crowds than if you were traveling in January. This doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck inside your hotel while it downpours your entire trip—like in most tropical destinations, summer weather usually only involves an occasional light shower each day. 

Research Similar Destinations

Think about what it is that appeals to you about a popular summer destination. If Alaska cruises are sold out or too expensive, Burdett-Munns advises booking an Arctic cruise instead. You’ll get similarly epic scenery with glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife sightings at a fraction of the cost.

How to Get to Banff

With 145 trails spread out over three peaks, you’ll never wait more than a few minutes for a lift—and on a spring day, you’ll have plenty of runs all to yourself. 

Since Sunshine Village averages up to 30 feet of snow in a season, there will still be plenty of powder to play in during the spring. 

Bike the Bow Valley Parkway

Under a new pilot program, a 10-mile section of the jaw-droppingly scenic Bow Valley Parkway is closed to all public motor vehicles from May 1 to May 25 and September 1 to September 30. During this time, the highway transforms into a peaceful paved path exclusive to cyclists and pedestrians. 

Not a regular bike rider? Don’t let the length intimidate you. An e-bike tour will let you ride the entire path (no matter your fitness level). Book a private tour with locally-owned tour company Bikescape and you can go at your own pace (they can also come bail you out at pickup points along the road if you do get tired). Bikescape has state-of-the-art e-bikes that will let you put in as little (or as much) pedaling effort as you like.

On your ride, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings, and leave plenty of time for photo stops (opportunities present themselves around practically every bend in the road). 

Banff Gondola

During springtime, hiking trails at higher elevations are still snow-covered, but you can still get a bird’s eye view of Banff on a trip up the Banff Gondola. The gondola smoothly whisks you up 2,292 feet to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, where you’ll have panoramic views of six mountain ranges. 

After the gondola drops you off, head past the 360-degree observation and follow the boardwalk to Sanson’s Peak for the most breathtaking views. 

Lake Louise Lakeshore Trail

Lake Louise’s world-famous emerald waters may still be hidden under a layer of ice and snow depending on when in the spring you visit, but this iconic destination is equally beautiful when frozen. Leave the crowds at the entrance behind and walk the Lakeshore trail, a just over a three-mile flat path that’s accessible year-round. You’ll be rewarded with peace and quiet, plus a different vantage point of the lake from what you normally see. 

Tunnel Mountain Hike

If you want bragging rights but are short on time, a hike up Tunnel Mountain will offer you the most bang for your buck. As the smallest official mountain in Banff, the summit of Tunnel Mountain can be reached in under an hour, so you don’t have to devote a whole day to your hike. Sweeping views of Banff and the surrounding mountains are your reward for making the climb. 

The trailhead can be walked to from downtown Banff and is popular with locals—so you won’t find solitude on this hike (but you also won’t need to bring bear spray).

Getting outside in Banff doesn’t always have to involve physical exertion. If you’re looking to work out your mind instead of your body, Forest Bathing might be the experience for you. How to Get Around Banff

Officially named the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world by Guinness World Records, Mosquito Bay is one of the best places in the world to witness the phenomenon. Located on the small island of Vieques, the bay is a quick ferry ride away from San Juan. 

The bay has become even brighter after 2017—according to Discover Puerto Rico, the concentration of dinoflagellates (the plankton that makes the water glow) “inexplicably doubled” after Hurricane Maria. 

Luminous Lagoon, Falmouth, Jamaica

Jamaica’s Luminous Lagoon is one of just four bioluminescent lagoons in the world—and, with millions of dinoflagellates, it’s the brightest. After dark, hop on a tour of the lagoon from Glistening Waters Marina and marvel as the water lights up in the wake of the boat. 

Swimming is encouraged in the warm, shallow lagoon so you can watch as the water lights up with every movement you make.

Indian River Lagoon, Florida, United States

To witness bioluminescence without leaving the continental United States, your best bet is to head to the Indian River Lagoon in Florida, which was billed as “the most reliable display of naturally occurring bioluminescence” in the country by National Geographic.

Both comb jellyfish and dinoflagellates generate bioluminescence in these waters, meaning you’ll have a good chance to see it no matter the time of year.

La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico

If you want a full-body bioluminescent experience, head to La Parguera—the only bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico where swimming is allowed. Book a snorkeling tour and feel like you’re swimming through a night sky full of stars in this unique place. 

San Juan Island, Washington, United States

You’ll have to time it just right to catch the magical bioluminescence in the waters around San Juan Island. The phenomenon is most active after hot and sunny days, and it’s easiest to see on dark, moonless nights. 

Visit in June through September to have the best chances of experiencing bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is most visible in the dark—so visiting during the new moon (when there is the least amount of light) is the best time. 

Is It Safe to Swim in Bioluminescent Water?

Whether or not it’s safe to swim in bioluminescent water depends on the environment. Some creatures that produce bioluminescence, like the algal bloom that causes “red tide” can be toxic, and humans would want to avoid swimming with them. There can also be other environmental hazards in the water that would make it unsafe to swim in, especially at night, so always do your research before jumping in.

Many bioluminescent bays and beaches also prohibit swimming in order to protect the environment—adhere to local rules around swimming. 

Tips for Visiting a Bioluminescent Bay or Beach

To have the best experience when visiting a bioluminescent bay or beach, follow these tips.

1. Leave your phone behind—most photos of bioluminescent waters you see online are heavily Photoshopped. The phenomenon is actually very difficult to capture on camera.
2. Visit on a dark night for the best visibility.
3. If you’re swimming in a bioluminescent bay, shower before you visit and avoid wearing lotions and bug spray as chemicals can pollute the fragile ecosystem. 
4. Book a tour. The best way to experience bioluminescent waters is to get in them (or out on them). From glass-bottomed kayaks to snorkeling tours, there are many unique ways to see the phenomenon.
